An Overview of My Work

During my time at Storybook Farm I have witnessed on several occasions the application of things I have learned in my Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies courses. Storybook Farm held an onboarding meeting and orientation for its board of trustees which I attended. I was able to hear about the organization’s strategic plan, budget, and their rules of order. These are all things I learned about extensively in my courses. This also helped me realize the true determination, patience, and most importantly, passion that it takes to run a nonprofit. I have also learned a lot about myself. Before coming to Storybook Farm, I had little experience with horses. By the end of my practicum I was able to groom, wash, lead, and feed a horse. I had no idea that I would grow to love these animals as much as I do. I would also say I have grown to be much more confident in myself. I have become more social and made several new friends as well as mentors that I have made in my superiors. My newfound confidence also makes me more ambitious for the future. I feel as though I am better prepared to work with others, work under pressure, and stop at nothing to get a task done.

Semester in Review: About

Field Trips

During the summer, normal ridings sessions are not conducted. For this reason Storybook Farm encourages churches, schools, and any other organizations to bring their kids out to enjoy the farm. During my practicum, I helped with several field trips. I worked with children in the arena guiding them through obstacle courses, teaching them about the daily operations of Storybook Farm, and taking them to their next station.

Barn Remodel

Storybook Farm was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to build a new and larger barn. This summer marked the beginning of this transition for the farm. To make the transition easier, I helped with organization of the items in the old barn before its demolition. I cleaned and organized the upstairs office as well as the tack room which housed all the equipment for horseback riding.

Preparation for 2020

Due to the farm going through a transition period, it was pertinent that they begin preparing for the upcoming year ahead of time. Many days I spent making Valentine's Day Thank You cards as well as planning for the Valentine's Day party for 2020. In addition to this, I helped come up with the spring riding theme for 2020 for when the barn is up and running and riding sessions commence once again. I also helped plan the organization of the programming for the new barn. I came up with ways in which the programs, riding, horticulture, and companion animals, could be incorporated into the new barn. Lastly, towards the end of my practicum, I helped repaint the fences that make up the paddocks with the help of volunteers and some other interns.

Horse Care

One of my favorite things I learned while at Storybook Farm was horse care. One of the first things I learned was how to lead a horse. I learned that it's important to walk on the left side of the horse and how to maintain control. I also learned how to groom a horse as well as the difference in the five brushes used for the process. I helped feed the horses which is a very extensive process. Each horse gets a different amount, possibly a different kind, and some may get medication in addition to their food. I also cleaned stalls and refilled water buckets as well as brought the horses in and out of their paddocks when necessary.
